BeesNeez Isobel FET Condenser Microphone
The inspirations for the sound of the BeesNeez Isobel were the Neumann U87 and the AKG C414. Neither of these mics were bright or gritty but were well balanced. The all-Australian-made Isobel is completed with the BeesNeez K6 [K67] microphone capsule and has a low self-noise, yet fast transient response.
The capsule in the Isobel Fet is BeesNeez’ very own K6 microphone capsule, which is a perfect replica of the K67. It is a dual backplate K6 capsule made identical to the original K67. However, the Isobel only uses half of the capsule. Beesneez’ mylar is 6 micron DuPont that’s personally framed, sputtered, tuned, and fixed to the backplate, which BeesNeez also wholly manufacture.
Many microphones these days have a gritty and harsh tone, especially in the upper mids and highs. This is due to the quality of the materials and manufacturing techniques of these microphones. However, the quality materials and manufacturing techniques used in the Isobel Fet give it very detailed mids and highs but no grit. The end result is a surprisingly-affordable microphone that is equal in quality and sound to microphones that are many times its cost.
The Isobel body tube is made from a single piece of cold-formed 380 grade brass tube. BeesNeez use the 380 grade brass tube in this particular microphone because the high copper content in the 380 tube provides excellent rejection and shielding. After machining the body, it is sent to a local powder coater for completion. The base, like the body tube, is made from 380 grade brass. However, this time it’s a solid brass round that’s cut and formed in their very own 8-axis CNC turning center. The head grille is integrated in the body tube, by cutting windows into the body tube.
