Oberheim Xpander – Analog Synthesizer Module

The Oberheim Xpander is a revered piece of synthesizer history that has been the cornerstone of countless classic and modern recordings. Launched originally in 1984 and discontinued in 1988, this synthesizer offers immense sound design capabilities that stand up to modern standards despite its vintage status.

      Technical Specifications:

      • Type: Analog synthesizer
      • Voice Architecture: Each of the six voices is completely independent and can be configured with different timbres. A feature-rich multi-patch mode expands the soundscaping possibilities.
      • Oscillators: Equipped with two voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) per voice, capable of generating sawtooth, triangle, pulse, or noise waveforms. Pulse width can be modulated. Includes both subtractive synthesis and frequency modulation (FM) synthesis.
      • Filters: A versatile multi-mode voltage controlled filter (VCF) offers numerous modes: one-, two-, three-, and four-pole low pass; one-, two-, and three-pole high pass; two- and four-pole band pass; two-pole notch; three-pole phase shift; combination modes with one-pole low pass; and more.
      • Amplification: Two sequential voltage-controlled amplifiers (VCAs) for signal processing.
      • Outputs: Mono, stereo, and six independent outputs for the six voices.

      Digital Control Elements:

      • Envelopes: Up to five DADSR (Delay, Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release) envelope generators per voice.
      • Low-Frequency Oscillators (LFOs): Each voice can utilize up to five LFOs with various waveforms, including triangle, square, up-saw, down-saw, random, or noise.
      • Lag Generator: Similar to portamento, the lag function can be applied to various signals.
      • Ramp Generators: Up to four per voice, creating linear ramp signals.
      • Tracking Generators: Three tracking generators per voice for advanced control mapping.

      Renowned Usage:

The Xpander’s rich sound has been utilized by musical icons spanning multiple genres. Notable users include Vince Clarke of Erasure, Depeche Mode, Tangerine Dream, Steve Roach, The Chemical Brothers, Nine inch Nails and film score maestro Hans Zimmer, among many others.
