Focusrite Red 7 – Mic Pre & Dynamics (Used)
The Focusrite Red 7 integrates the same exceptional mic pre-amp found in the Red 1 and Red 8, featuring a dual-range mic gain dial for precise control over the device’s entire spectrum. It includes phantom power and phase reverse capabilities. The Line input offers continuously variable gain and is electronically balanced.
Its high-quality output fader grants +6dB gain to infinite attenuation, crucial for both accurate level matching following EQ and dynamics, and direct recordings. Complementing the mic pre, there is a comprehensive dynamics section tailored for vocal optimization. Thanks to its excellent signal path, ease of use, and integrated all-in-one design, the Red 7 proves to be an invaluable tool for vocal recording, whether in music studios or post-production environments. Borrowed from the Red 3, the compressor is notable for maintaining low noise and distortion even under significant processing. It allows for relatively heavy compression while preserving a natural, transparent sound. Users have the ability to continuously adjust the ratio, gain make-up, threshold, attack, and release, with the option to utilize a program-dependent auto-release mode. A swept high-pass filter efficiently addresses issues like rumble, bass lift, and proximity effect.
The de-esser/exciter section can switch between frequency-selective compression (de-essing) and excitation, with both the amount and center frequency being continuously adjustable. Relying on Focusrite’s single-VCA technique across all dynamics, the device delivers minimal undesired sound coloration. A clear VU meter displays either the level following the pre-amp gain control, or the compressor’s gain changes.
